Expected Cold Front Prompts Fire Department to Issue Warning and Safety Tips

Predicted 40 degree temperatures will have homeowners firing up heating sources and firefighters busy this weekend . . .

As a cold front approaches, the Shreveport Fire Department is preparing for a busy weekend and warning area residents against the threat of fire. Traditionally, the first days where the thermostat dips into the 40's increases the number of fires and heat source related medical emergencies the department responds to. Additionally, along with fires and the injuries that can result from such incidents is the threat of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning. Here are a few safety tips to protect yourself and community against the threat of fire and CO pinioning over this weekend and other cold days to come:

1. Residence should be careful when using open-flame gas or kerosene space heaters to not place any combustibles to close to the heat source.
2. Do not run cords for heaters under any material, such as a rug. The cords heat up when in use and can start a fire.
3. Children should never be left alone in a room with an open flame of any type.
4. Heating and air handling units should be checked by a licensed professional.
5. Chimneys need to be serviced and cleaned at the start of every winter season.
6. All homes should have working smoke detectors and those with gas heat should have a Carbon Monoxide detector. Smoke detectors are free by calling SFD Fire Prevention at 673-6740
7. Change out or clean all air intake filters. The buildup can start a fire and cause Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
8. Do not use alternative heat sources, like the stove or candles to heat your home.
9. Be careful not to overload home electrical outlets. Overloaded outlets can heat up, short and start a fire.
