November 25, 2008 - West Shreveport Woman Dies in Early Morning House Fire

One Hour to Extinguish Heavy Flames

A smoldering cigarette is the cause of an early morning fire that took the life of a West Shreveport homeowner. This morning at 2:14 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 5762 Jefferson-Paige Road after receiving a call from neighbors that flames were coming from the neighboring home. Firefighters arrived on scene at 2:15 a.m. It took approximately 15 firefighters -- 5 fire crews-- one hour to extinguish the heavy flames.

Fire Captain Ivory Wiggins reported that upon arrival flames were billowing from the exterior windows on each side and flames extended at least 15 feet through the roof. Neighbors informed authorities that someone was inside and that immediate assistance was needed.

After extinguishing the fire, fire crews discovered, Patricia Easom, 53, in a small hallway about fifteen feet from the area of fire origination.

According to Fire Investigator Mike Hood, “The fire is classified as accidental. The fire originated on a sofa in the living room and was likely caused by a smoldering cigarette that ignited sofa and other combustible materials. We are awaiting results from the Caddo Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death.”

This marks the sixth fire death in Shreveport this year. According to Fire Chief Brian Crawford, “This is tragic especially around this season. This should remind each of us to take every precaution to keep our homes safe from fire.”
