March 21, 2009 - Two Alarm Apartment Fire

A total of 11 apartments received fire or smoke damage

The Shreveport Fire Department responded to the Briarwood Apartments at 4025 Golf Links Boulevard this afternoon at 1:19 PM. Fire crews arrived on scene at 1:22 PM to find heavy fire coming from the roof and upstairs apartments of one of the apartment units. Fire crews immediately began evacuating the involved unit of apartments and two adjacent units next to it. The fire had spread quickly through the attic space of the building which prompted the on scene commander to call for a second alarm response at 1:33 PM for more manpower to fully extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control at 2:01 PM.

The fire started in an upstairs apartment which was occupied by one 20 year old female. She stated she had a candle burning on a table and was awakened by the smell of smoke in her apartment. Fire investigators confirmed that this was the cause of the fire.

The 20 year old female was transported to LSU Medical Center for a burn to her hand and a bruised knee she sustained while exiting her apartment. There was also one firefighter transported to Willis Knighton Medical Center from the scene. The 43 year old male firefighter became dizzy and experienced chest pain and was taken to the hospital to be checked by a physician.

There were a total of 11 apartments that receive either fire and/or smoke damage. Seven of those were total losses.
