December 8, 2009 - Encouraging Compliance with Stove-top Fire Suppression Ordinance
The Shreveport Fire Department issues a friendly reminder to managers/owners to comply by with the city code by January 1, 2010

In June 2009, Fire Chief Brian A. Crawford presented to City Officials a resolution requiring all apartment owners/managers to install Stovetop suppression systems in all apartment buildings with three or more units with no automatic sprinkler system. City officials overwhelmingly supported and passed the ordinance after fire personnel responded to rash of apartment fires over a 4-month period resulting in millions of dollars in property damage. Even though the ordinance mandated the installation of these property saving devices by October 1, 2009, Shreveport Fire Officials felt that property owners should be given an extended grace period allowing them time to prepare for the new ordinance.
“Since the ordinance was adopted, we have at least four documented cases proving that these small devices are effective. Apartment owners might view this as an attempt to add a financial burden on them, but we view it as a community partnership to protect each citizen,” stated Chief Crawford. “Property owners should consider this device as an additional fire and life safety tool along with a smoke alarm or fire extinguisher.”
Effective January 1, 2010, Shreveport Fire Inspectors will begin enforcing compliance of Article III Section 30-70. The Shreveport Fire Prevention Division is encouraging apartment owners to comply and avoid being fined up to $500.00 per violation or receiving thirty days in jail.
