January 30, 2010 - Cause of Fire which displaced Shreveport Family: Electric Space Heater

Clothing accidently placed too close to an electric space heater is the likely cause a house fire in the Stoner Hill Community.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., the Shreveport Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 1100 block of Cornwell Avenue, located north of Stoner Avenue. Firefighters arrived on scene within two minutes to find heavy smoke coming from the doors and windows on the south and west sides of the home. Fire crews entered the home to find flames in the area of the laundry room and bathroom.

The occupant told firefighters she saw flames coming from the laundry room area, then she and her family quickly evacuated the home and called 9-1-1. According to Fire Officials, a space heater was located between the bathroom and laundry room, and the laundry room is believed to be the origin of the fire. This fire is classified as accidental.

As citizens brace for the frigid temperatures this weekend, the Shreveport Fire Department would like to remind everyone to: Stay Warm, Be Safe and Stay Alive. Remember, Space Heaters need Space.
