April 10, 2010 - Afternoon Fire Cause Evacuation of Hotel

The fire caused the third and fourth floor to fill up with heavy black smoke.

The Shreveport Fire Department responded to the Mid City Plaza Hotel at 1545 Line Avenue for smoke that was filling up the top floor of the hotel. Crews arrived on scene to find an elevator motor on fire and quickly extinguished it. The fire caused the third and fourth floor to fill up with heavy black smoke. The fourth floor houses residential apartments with approximately 75 occupants. All the occupants escaped with only one, a 39 year old male, transported to LSU Medical Center for smoke inhalation. He was stable on the scene and appeared to have no life threatening injuries. Fire crews worked for about an hour ventilating the smoke from all the apartments in the building. The cause of the motor igniting is still under investigation.
