May 16, 2010 - Late Night Fire Damages Home

The home was protected by burglar bars, which caused firefighters some problems

The Shreveport Fire Department responded late this evening to 3205 Lawden Street for a reported house fire. Fire crews arrived on scene at 9:45 pm to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of a single story brick home. The home was protected by burglar bars, which caused firefighters some problems with access to the home. Additionally, there were early reports that an elderly female may be inside. Once inside, two fire crews were used to search the home and another to extinguish the fire, which had spread through the attic. The home owner was not home at the time but arrived after being notified that his home was on fire. He informed fire officials that there was no one in the home and no one was at home when the fire started. The fire was brought under control at 10:03 pm.

The home suffered heavy fire damage throughout the attic and one room along with heavy smoke damage. One firefighter was injured at the scene. Fire Captain John Howard sustained a second degree burn t o his right hand and was transported to Willis Knighton Medical Center. He was treated and released. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
