May 25, 2010 - Funeral Arrangements for Retired Captain Deborah Mims

Captain Mims was the first female firefighter for SFD

Funeral arrangements have been made for retired Captain Deborah Mims, who passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010, from a battle with cancer. Captain Mims was the first female firefighter hired by the Shreveport Fire Department in 1980 and retired in 1999. Logistics for the arrangements are as follows:

Visitation

    ● Captain Mims will lie in state from 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Friday, May 28th at New Testament United Pentecostal Church at 4400 Fairy Street. Family Hour will be from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.

Funeral Services

    ● New Testament United Pentecostal Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 29, 2010

Internment

    ● Carver Memorial Cemetery at 498 Kennie Road in Shreveport, LA immediately following funeral service

Fire Chief Brian Crawford stated, “Deborah left her mark and was truly a pioneer in her day, opening the doors of the fire service in Shreveport to further diversity and demonstrating that a woman could be a firefighter - inspiring many to follow in her footsteps. The appreciation and the condolences of the Shreveport Fire Department go out to the Mims family in this difficult time”.
