June 25, 2010 - Shreveport Fire Department offers July 4th Fireworks Safety Tips

Upcoming Holiday warrants extra measures to ensure public safety

Did you know? Fireworks have become one of the leading causes of injuries serious enough to require hospital emergency room treatment resulting in permanent scarring, loss of vision and dismemberment because of amateur fireworks use. Fireworks can result in severe burns, fractures, scars, lifelong disfigurement or even death.

Because of these alarming statistics, Shreveport Fire Chief Brian A Crawford has released the following safety tips and family-oriented options for celebrating the holiday. “Rockets over the Red”, a professional fireworks display show will be held on July 4th on the Riverfront. Parking is available on the Shreveport and Bossier City sides of the river. It’s open to the public.

For those who choose to purchase fireworks from local vendors, firework sales begin today and continue through 10:00 p.m. on Monday, July 5. The discharging of fireworks is prohibited after 10 p.m. on Monday, July 5th . The Shreveport Fire Prevention Division will enforce the strict firework ordinance.

Safety Tips:
Always read and follow the label directions carefully and use fireworks according to manufactures recommendations

    ● Fireworks should be used outdoors away from your house, any flammable materials, and onlookers.
    ● A bucket of water or garden hose should remain nearby for extinguishment of fireworks that do not go off or in case there is a fire.
    ● Adults should always supervise fireworks activity.
    ● Light fireworks one at a time.
    ● NEVER allow small children to handle fireworks.
    ● Never ignite fireworks in any container.
    ● Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
    ● Attend a public firework display if possible.
