November 24, 2010 - Shreveport Fire Department Reminds All Citizens to Keep Thanksgiving Safe The Holiday season marks a busy time for the SFD The Shreveport Fire Department (SFD) would like to remind all citizens to stay as safe as possible this Thanksgiving holidays as you celebrate with your families and friends. According to data from the United States Fire Administration (USFA), an estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings occur annually in the United States, resulting in an estimated average of five deaths, 25 injuries, and $21 million in property loss each year. The leading cause of all Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings is cooking. In addition, these fires occur most frequently in the afternoon hours from noon to 4 p.m. And unfortunately, smoke alarms were not present in 20 percent of Thanksgiving Day fires that occurred in occupied residential buildings. The USFA also suggests these safety cooking tips: ● Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area, and in every bedroom. Test smoke alarms monthly and replace them if they are 10 years old or older.
Deep-fried turkey has quickly grown in popularity and sometimes at the expense of sacrificing fire safety for good taste. If you absolutely must use a turkey fryer, please use the following tips: ● Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors a safe distance from buildings and any other flammable materials.
The Holiday season marks a busy time for the SFD. Holiday decorations, heating, and increased indoor cooking remain to be the primary causes of residential fires during this time of year. Fire Chief Brian Crawford reminds all the citizens to “Check your smoke detector and ensure it is working properly, discuss your home escape plan with your family and to practice good fire safety tips during the holiday season.”
