December 13, 2010 - Candle Fire Safety Tips

USFA estimate 15,260 home candle fires occur every year

The Holiday Season brings about the increased use of candles in homes and businesses for decorations and aroma that they produce when lit. According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA), December is the peak time of year for home candle fires and on average 42 home candle fires are reported every day. They also estimate 15,260 home candle fires occur every year. Most candle fires result from human error and negligence making the casualties and associated property damage from these fires preventable.

Based on these statistics, the USFA and the Shreveport Fire Department recommend the following candle safety tips:

    ● If possible, avoid using lighted candles.
    ● If you must use candles, ensure that they are placed in sturdy holders.
    ● Keep candles away from children and pets.
    ● Be sure to extinguish candles after each use.
    ● Never leave burning candles unattended.

Following these safety tips should help ensure a safe and happy holiday season in your home.
