Shreveport Police Department’s grass roots crime-fighting campaign will make its third appearance when officers go door to door visiting residents in the northern Martin Luther King neighborhood Thursday.
Officers will meet at the intersection of Hawkins and Tower at 10 a.m. From there, they will go to about 100 houses, visiting with residents and encouraging them to report crime they see in their neighborhood.
The campaign already has been to homes in the Lakeside and Allendale communities. And the effort is paying off.
Besides several arrests and citations issued in those locations, the phone number given out by the media (673-7236) is being used by residents throughout the city who are giving anonymous police tips and information about ongoing crime.
One man recently called to report the theft of items being taken from a house that was under construction. The man not only knew what items were taken, he knew who took them and where the items could be located. The information led to a felony theft arrest and the recovery of items that included cabinets that had been taken out of the new house and installed in the suspect’s house.
The media is welcome to walk with the officers. Just meet at the intersection of Hawkins and Tower at 10 a.m.
