Strap on your tennis shoes and get out your sweat bands. It’s time for the Seventh Annual Dean/Williams 5K Run and Healthwalk for Special Olympics.
The run, which is a memorial run honoring fallen police officers Ron Dean and Dwayne Williams, is set for April 20. Entry fee for the run/walk is $15 and includes a commemorative t-shirt.
A memorial ceremony for the two officers and all fallen police officers will take place at 7:45 a.m. on April 20 at the Police and Fire Memorial on Clyde Fant Parkway. A half-mile run/walk will begin at 8:15 a.m., and participants in the 5K run/walk competitions will take to the streets at 8:45 a.m. Runners will head south down Clyde Fant to Stoner Park and then return north to the Fire and Police Memorial. Prizes will be given in various age categories, and Sportspectrum Race Management will certify the race.
Another event to raise money will be held this weekend on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A BBQ rib sale will take place at the Sam’s Club parking lot around the clock. Cost of the dinner is $7.
On May 21, officers will participate in the Special Olympics Torch Run, which begins in Shreveport and ends in Natchitoches, where other state law enforcement officers will pass the torch and run to Alexandria, to Baton Rouge and to Hammond in time for the start of the Special Olympic Games on May 25.
