Walking door to door greeting neighbors in various Shreveport communities paid off again today after a tip to a police hotline led to stolen items in north Shreveport’s Martin Luther King neighborhood.
Betty Reed, 41, of the 3300 block of Montana was arrested this afternoon on a charge of illegal possession of stolen things and theft of utilities.
A box fan – believed to be one of 57 fans stolen from the MLK Neighborhood Association – was found at the residence. Officers are working to recover the other stolen fans, which were to be given to elderly people in need of relief from the hot summer temperatures.
Officers also found a stolen water meter and electrical meter that had previously been taken from two separate residences in the MLK neighborhood. They had been hooked up and were in operation until the utility companies unhooked the stolen items this afternoon.
This arrest is one of many that have resulted from the SPD’s grass roots crime fighting campaign that began in January. So far, officers have visited residents in the Allendale, Lakeside and MLK communities. Next Thursday, April 18, at 10 a.m. officers will take to the streets of Mooretown.
A large contingent of officers, police pastors and citizens will meet at the Lone Star Baptist Church, 5603 Ellison, and go door to door distributing letters with a phone number for residents to call who want to report crime in their neighborhood.
