Police to carry torch for Special Olympics
Shreveport police officers will join other local law enforcement officers for the Special Olympics Torch Run that begins Monday, May 20.
About 20 police officers will leave with Caddo Parish sheriff’s deputies from the Caddo Correctional Center about 7:15 a.m. They will run to the Caddo Parish Courthouse on Texas Street and meet up with officers from Bossier City and Bossier Parish for a 9 a.m. ceremony.
The officers will then leave the courthouse and run down Youree Drive to the intersection of Flournoy Lucas. On Tuesday, they will pick up their run from there and carry the torch to Natchitoches and then to Alexandria. The torch will then be carried to Baton Rouge and onto Hammond in time for the Special Olympic games to be held May 25 and 26.
This annual event supports special athletes throughout the state, and is the culmination of months of hard fund-raising done by the officers. Last year, Northwest Louisiana law enforcement raised over $35,000.
