Police officers to receive awards

Police Chief Jim Roberts will be recognizing police officers for everything from saving a life to catching a serial rapist during an awards ceremony set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 26.

The awards that will be given include two Unit Citations, which are given to special police units who have performed outstanding tasks; five Life Saving Awards, which are given to those who save the life of another person; and a Chief Appreciation Award, which is given to an individual for outstanding contribution to the department or the community.

Those getting Unit Citations are:

    • The Sex Crimes Unit, for outstanding work in both the Jimmy Ray Washington and Wendell Liesman serial rape cases. These dangerous criminals violently victimized citizens of Shreveport, and the teamwork and tireless effort put forth by the Sex Crimes Unit helped solve these crimes.

    • The Traffic Bureau, for outstanding performance of duty on numerous tasks, including staffing special events like the Independence Bowl and Miss USA pageants, as well as providing escorts for politicians and special occasions. This group also has done an outstanding job conducting regular DWI and Administrative checkpoints on a regular basis.

Those getting Life Saving Awards are:

    • Officer Clint Cain, for administering CPR to a man who collapsed of a heart attack in a parking lot at First United Methodist Church on Easter Sunday, March 30, 2001.

    • Jailer I Patricia Evans, Jailer II Joe Smith, Jailer I Harold Coleman and Jailer I Eddie Payton, for saving the lives of inmates caught trying to commit suicide.

The officer getting the Chief’s Appreciation Award is:

    • Sgt. Robin Snyder, for years of dedication and service to the Shreveport Police Department’s Ceremonial Unit, which serves as a formal honor guard at special events and funerals.

The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. in the Police Assembly Room, located on the second floor of the Shreveport Police Department.
