FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Applications sought for police officer jobs

Now that Shreveport police officers make more than $30,000 a year, the number of applicants for the job is expected to increase.

At least, that’s what the Shreveport Police Department hopes to see happen.

The first round of testing for Shreveport police officer takes place in February, and department leaders hope more applicants will come forward.

The required Civil Service Examination is set for Feb. 26, but those wanting to take the test must turn in their applications by Feb. 7.

The Civil Service Test Exam is a written test that must be passed as part of the application process to become a Shreveport police officer.

Everyone who passes the exam will be placed on an eligibility list and go through a hiring process that consists of interviews, background checks, physical fitness tests and more. Those accepted for the job of police officer will then attend the Shreveport Regional Police Academy for 16 weeks of training, then six months of training on the Field Training Officer Program. Beginning this year, starting pay for police officers increased from $2,029 a month to $2,529 a month thanks to a pay raise approved by city voters. After one year of service, state supplemental pay boosts the annual police officer salary to $2,829 a month.

Specific requirements are slightly different for each job, but applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, be in good health, have no felony convictions and be of good moral character.

The Shreveport Police Department is an equal opportunity employer. To apply, go to Room 208 or 223 of the Shreveport Police Department, 1234 Texas Ave. Or call 673-7150 for more information.
