Student arrested after threatening to take class hostage

A 13-year-old Shreveport boy was arrested yesterday afternoon after he threatened to take his seventh-grade classroom hostage and shoot his classmates.

The J.S. Clark Middle School student was suspended from school for making the threat and went home.

Shortly after arriving home at 2:30 p.m., detectives with the Youth Services Bureau received a call from the boy’s mother. They responded to J.S. Clark, where they coordinated with school security officials to locate the juvenile.

According to his mother, the boy left home and went into the south Allendale area of Shreveport to a friend’s home. While there, he armed himself with a 9mm handgun. The gun did not have any ammunition, so the youth left for another friend’s house to retrieve bullets for the handgun. He was captured by Shreveport before he got to the home on Madison Street.

He was taken into custody and questioned by juvenile detectives, who learned that he had armed himself with the intent to go back to the school and shoot at least one student who had been teasing him that day.

The boy faces charges of illegal carrying of a weapon and illegal possession of a weapon by a juvenile. He has been booked into the Caddo Parish Juvenile Detention Center. More charges are possible.

Detective Michael Carter will be available for interviews on this case today at 3 p.m. in the PIO office located in Room 132 of the Shreveport Police Department.
