FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Officers deploy Taser for first time

A Shreveport Police officer deployed a Taser today on a suspect who was threatening his estranged girlfriend in the 2400 block of Portland.

Ernest Johnson, 36, of Shreveport refused to comply with officers and was resisting arrest when an officer used his Taser to subdue the suspect.

The Taser probes attached to Johnson’s clothing, and he received a five-second jolt from the Taser. As officers tried to apprehend him, he continued to resist and was hit with the Taser a second time. At that point, he complied and was taken into custody.

The Shreveport Fire Department was called to check on Johnson, who was not injured.

An initial investigation into the incident showed that the Taser was used properly, allowing officers to avoid a physical confrontation that could have resulted in injuries to the suspect or the officers.

Johnson was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle for allegedly taking his girlfriend’s car previously. More charges could be filed pending investigation.

The domestic situation between Johnson and his girlfriend has been ongoing. The woman reported that he has threatened to do bodily harm to her. Children in the home also said they felt threatened by him.
