Shreveport police arrested a man Wednesday afternoon after he reportedly held his common law wife against her will for two days and attempted to kill her.
Shamsul Arefin, 25, of Shreveport was arrested around 5 p.m. after he fled from the rear of their home in the 1700 block of Pointe Coupee.
Police were notified by a neighbor that the 37-year-old woman had been assaulted and was being held in the apartment by her husband. The couple’s 2-year-old son also was in the residence.
According to the victim, Arefin beat her with a broom handle and tried to drown her in the shower. He also allegedly attempted to hang her with a piece of wire, which broke.
The man reportedly had threatened to kill the victim if police showed up. However, plain clothes detectives went to the door and were able to end the situation peacefully.
The woman suffered a laceration to her head and bruising to her throat and hands.
Arafen has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and booked into the Shreveport City Jail.
