Police officers receive federal award
Six members of the Shreveport Police Department were honored today by the U.S. Marshal Service for helping capture a dangerous prison escapee.
Sgt. Allen Johnson and Cpls. Kevin Goodwin, Dean Willis, Roy Menefee, Shanna Rellin and Eric Miles assisted in the capture of death row inmate Charles Victor Thompson in November of 2005.
Thompson had escaped from the Harris County Courthouse in Houston, Texas where he was being held on two counts of homicide. He was among the top 10 Most Wanted individuals because of the way he tortured and brutally murdered his victims.
Upon learning the suspect was in Shreveport, the SPD detectives – serving on the U.S. Marshal Service Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team -- assembled and devised a quick plan of action. Within minutes, the strike team had Thompson in custody at a liquor store.
In addition to capturing Thompson, the detectives apprehended three other escapees in 2005. However, the Thompson capture stands out because of the dangerous nature of the individual and the threat to Shreveport citizens.
