SPD investigate fatal motorcycle wreck

Shreveport Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred late last night at Midway and Hearne.

Derrick Jones, 34, of Bossier City was killed after his 2002 Suzuki Katana 600 motorcycle collided with a 2000 black Hyundai Sonata driven by 18-year-old Ryan Johnson of Shreveport. Jones was headed southbound on Hearne when it struck the Sonata, which was and turning left onto Midway. The accident occurred about 11:40 p.m. last night.

Jones was a deputy with the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office. He had been with that agency for about three years and worked in corrections. Before that assignment, he worked in patrol.

"Derrick Jones was an outstanding officer and will be sorely missed," said Bossier Sheriff Larry Deen. "Our hearts go out to his family and friends."

Johnson was not found to be drinking at the time of the accident, although he was tested -- a standard procedure in major auto crashes. No charges have been filed. The investigation continues.
