New computer software helps fight crime
Detectives are getting a high-tech way to fight crime, thanks to a software and training program being given to the Shreveport Police Department by CVS Pharmacy.
This afternoon, CVS presented the EnCase! software to Chief of Police Mike Campbell, along with members of the SPD’s Investigative Division and the Caddo-Shreveport White Collar Crimes Task Force.
This software will allow detectives to copy hard drives of computers seized in criminal investigations. The detectives will be able to detect and document illegal activity on the computer – everything from check fraud and identity theft to child pornography and Internet crime. Previously, the department had to rely on the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office to get information off computers seized during investigations.
“This is a first for the Shreveport Police Department,” said Chief Campbell. “This type of forensic computer work will help greatly when it comes to detecting that criminal activity has occurred and by having documented evidence to prove it.”
Jennifer Jeter, Organized Retail Theft Field Manager for CVS pharmacies in the South Central United States, said CVS was happy to provide the software and training.
“CVS wants to be proactive in detecting crime, and this will assist with any computer-based investigation,” Jeter said. “We have a lot of stores in the Shreveport area, and we want to build positive relationships within the community.”
Shreveport Police detectives Greg Rudell and Jason Person, who are assigned to the Caddo-Shreveport White Collar Task Force, will receive training soon. A special computer also has been purchased by the police department to facilitate the new software.
