Another accident turns fatal

The Hit and Run Unit was notified by the Coroners office yesterday that crash victim Fred D. Mathews (B/M, 03/23/1960, 1109 Heatherwood Drive) died as a result of the injuries he sustained in a crash on 08/20/2006. Mathews was west bound on Milam Street crossing Spring with a green light at 0805hrs that Sunday morning when a North bound Tahoe ran the light hitting Mathew's directly in the driver's door. The Tahoe driver, 20-year-old Darnell Caldwell, was intoxicated at the time and was arrested at the scene and booked into the city jail charged with First Degree Vehicular negligent Injuring. The Homicide Screening section at the District attorney's office has been notified and they advised that they are going to increase Caldwell's charge to Vehicular Homicide. Mathews was on his way to church at the time of this crash.
