FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Man arrested for desertion

Shreveport Police arrested a man for being a fugitive from the United States Army.

Xavier E. Nelson, 20, of Shreveport was arrested during an investigation involving a hit and run crash that occurred on April 6. During that crash, it is believed that Nelson was driving a 2001 Lincoln Navigator when it rear-ended a 2002 Ford Mustang, which was stopped at a red light on Milam at Arkansas.

The Navigator left the scene, but the Mustang driver followed the Navigator and was able to get license plate information. The investigation led to Nelson, who was found to have no insurance and no driver's license. The Navigator was impounded, and Nelson turned himself into crash investigators yesterday evening.

Nelson was wanted by the Army for allegedly disappearing from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in October just before his unit deployed to Iraq. He was charged as being a deserter during a time of war.
