A Shreveport police officer and candidate for Shreveport police chief is recovering at Schumpert today after being seriously injured by a drunk driver early this morning.
Cpl. Greg Jones was headed east on Bert Kouns at E. Kings Highway about 12:30 a.m. in his unmarked police vehicle when a GMC pickup truck driven by John Rogers III, 59, of Shreveport reportedly turned in front of him. While Jones tried to avoid the collision, he could not and was struck on the driver's side of his 2002 Malibu.
Jones was taken to Highland Hospital and later transferred to Schumpert, where he is recovering from injuries to his ribs and back.
Meanwhile, Rogers was taken for a breath test, where he was found to be more than two times the legal limit for intoxication. He was arrested and transported to the Shreveport City Jail. He is charged with DWI 1st, 1st Degree Negligent Injuring and Failure to Yield while making a left turn.
Jones was scheduled to speak at the "Meet the Police Chief Candidates" event tonight at Summer Grove Baptist Church. He will still be in the hospital at that time, but it is possible he could get out of the hospital in the next day or two.
