Officer exchanges gunfire with carjacking suspect A Shreveport police officer was involved in a shooting by a suspected carjacker this morning. At approximately 7:45 a.m., the officer located a vehicle that had been taken during a reported carjacking about an hour earlier. The vehicle was parked at the Expressway Grocery located at 2309 Alabama. When the driver saw police, he fled from the officer and ultimately wrecked the vehicle into a utility pole at the corner of West College and Alabama streets. After he wrecked the car, the suspect reportedly got out and began firing at the officer. The officer returned fire and struck the suspect at least twice. The suspect ran from the scene, but the officer was able to give chase. He was taken into custody about four blocks away. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Alonzo Williams of Shreveport, was taken to LSU Hospital with non life-threatening gunshot wounds. When he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Shreveport City Jail on charges that will include attempted murder of a police officer and armed robbery. Meanwhile, the officer is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation. This is standard procedure whenever an officer fires their duty weapon. The officer, whose name is not being released at this time, has been on the force for 4½ years.
