FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Press Conference set for tomorrow
Shreveport Police Chief Henry Whitehorn will join Shreveport Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran in hosting his first news conference at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Aug. 2, in the Police Assembly Room.
The two chiefs will be announcing a joint program called "Look Good & Feel Great."
The program is aimed at helping children in need this school year and involves a citywide uniform drive where officers and firefighters seek to find uniforms for children who don't have them.
Citizens can donate new or gently worn uniforms for the program at any of fire stations in the city, as well at the police department. Cash donations also will be accepted and used to buy socks and underwear for the children, as well as uniforms.
Porter's Cleaners will clean the uniforms for free. The uniforms will then be distributed to officers and firefighters who sign up children in their neighborhoods who they know are in need.
It is believed that having new clothes for school can make a difference in how children look and feel about themselves. It gives them confidence to face their fellow students and teachers and instills within them a sense of pride.
Many businesses and community groups will be on hand for the news conference to provide the first donations to the program, and the media will get to meet a single mother of nine children who will be helped by the program.
Anyone interested in making a donation of uniforms or clothing can get more information by calling 673-6950. Checks may be made payable to the Shreveport Police Department in care of the Community Oriented Policing Bureau, 1234 Texas Avenue, Shreveport, La. 71101.
