FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Citizens programs underway

The Shreveport Police Department began training new Auxiliary Police officers this week, and will hold their second training session tonight (Thursday, Aug. 9) at 6 p.m.

The Auxiliary Unit serves as a group of volunteer officers who do many of the same tasks that police officers do. They patrol neighborhoods, work accidents, write parking tickets and direct traffic, among other duties.

While this class has gotten underway, the Community Oriented Policing Bureau is working to recruit others who are interested in becoming Auxiliary Officers.

In addition, the COP Bureau is taking registration for folks who would like to attend the upcoming Citizens Police Academy. This program meets one night a week for 10 weeks and will give people an up-close and hands-on look at what police work is all about. No date for the next CPA has yet been set, but applications are being accepted.

Both events take place at the Shreveport Police Academy, located at 6440 Greenwood Road. To register for either, call 673-6950.

Another citizen program coming up at the academy is a Basic Women's Self-Defense Course. It will be held from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. To register, call 673-7170.

Information can be left with crimestoppers at 673-7373 or by logging onto the crimestoppers website at www.crimestoppersshreveportcaddo.com.
