Police targeting unregistered sex offenders

Shreveport Police Department is looking for an estimated 141 Shreveport sex offenders who have failed to register with the City of Shreveport.

Beginning Sept. 16, the Sex Crimes Offender Registry Enforcement effort gets underway. It's aim -- to cause as many unregistered sex offenders as possible who reside within the City of Shreveport to comply with the state sex offender registration laws.

If offenders don't want officers showing up at their homes or jobs, they have about one week to visit the Shreveport Police Department and get registered. Registrants will need:

1.     A photo ID

2.     Two proofs of residency (such as lease papers, a water bill, phone bill, bank statement, etc.)

3.     A $60 money order

4.     Probation and Parole papers (if applicable)

If offenders are not registered by the end of the week, warrants will be issued for their arrest, and they will be picked up and booked into the Shreveport City Jail.

During the roundup, officers will be checking to ensure offenders are registered and have the appropriate labels on their state identification cards or driver’s licenses.

Sex offenders who meet the requirement to register with state, parish and municipal law enforcement agencies are notified upon conviction of these requirements which are mandated by state law. Anyone with questions about registration may contact the Sex Crimes Unit at 673-6955.
