FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Move it or lose it campaign

Just in time for holiday shopping, Shreveport Police Department is launching the Move It or Lose It campaign to prevent thefts from automobiles.

Thefts from autos are seasonal crimes that can pick up just because of the increased opportunity for thieves. The Shreveport Police Department has noticed an increase recently. In the first two weeks of this month, 83 people reported valuables being stolen out of their cars.

Many of these cases can be prevented by simply removing items or locking them in the trunk of their car. It only takes 30 seconds for a thief to break into your car and steal whatever they can get. But it takes less time than that to put your items out of site.

Sometimes citizens think that by simply covering items, it will prevent a burglar from breaking in. In actuality, doing that only sends a message to the burglar that there is something of value they should break in and steal.

When parking a vehicle, remember the following things:

* Close you windows and lock your doors, even if you will only be away for a short period of time.

* Remove valuables or lock them in the trunk.

* Remove "pull out" style radio face plates or other moveable stereo equipment (if equipped).

* Park in well-lit areas and around other cars. Thieves don't want to be noticed.

* Park in your garage if you have one, and keep the garage door closed.

* Use a car alarm if possible. It will alert anyone nearby.
