The City of Shreveport and the Fuller Center have joined forces to help a longtime resident fulfill the dream of living in a new home. | Lela G. Shakir will cut the ribbon at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, on her rebuilt home at 6124 Tulsa Ave., where she has lived for 39 years. Ms. Shakir’s home needed major repairs and she sought assistance through a program operated by the Department of Community Development. However, a thorough inspection revealed that the needed repairs exceeded the program’s limit of $35,000. | Thanks to funds from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, Ms. Shakir’s home was demolished in June 2011 and completely rebuilt on the existing lot.
