In keeping with the requirements of State Civil Service law, Shreveport Mayor Cedric B. Glover announces today that Interim Police Chief Mike VanSant will return to the position of Assistant Chief of Police, but will continue to be SPD’s ultimate decision maker in handling the day-to-day operations of the Shreveport Police Department until a police chief is named. | “Given the number of applicants for the position, it’s not unusual for the selection process to extend beyond the 15 days provided by state law”, says City Attorney Terri Scott. “The Mayor obviously needs this time to select the best person for the position”. | VanSant has agreed to handle day-to-day operations of the department, subject to approval by Mayor Glover who is the appointing authority under Civil Service law, pending the appointment of a new police chief and confirmation by the Shreveport City Council. | VanSant has served as Interim Police Chief since the retirement of former Chief Mike Campbell. State civil service law does not permit the Mayor to appoint Chief VanSant for an additional term, as Interim Chief of Police. |
| “I have witnessed seven months of exemplary performance by Mike as Interim Police Chief. I want the citizens of Shreveport to know that our City is safe, we’re in good hands and our Police Department has a respected, qualified and competent leader”, says Glover. | Contrary to rumors and a recent media report there is no “short list “of candidates, the merits of all 18 are being considered. Mayor Glover will name Shreveport’s new police chief by the end of the month. |
