Calling it “one of the most fulfilling things they’ve ever done,” Mayor Cedric B. Glover’s 2008 Class of Summer Interns (M.S.I.P.) will wrap-up their five-week internship with an innovative community service project.

Operation: Light Bulb was written, designed and proposed by intern Emily Mourad, a junior at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Friday June 27, 2008 from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM Emily, her fellow interns and a group of student volunteers will head to Shreveport’s Shepherd Place Neighborhood to replace the existing light bulbs of residents with new energy-efficient CFL light bulbs. “We will give each home 16 environmentally friendly light bulbs for them to put in their homes,” says Mourad. “CFL bulbs are about 80% more energy efficient that regular bulbs and can save a yearly average of about $300.00 on an electric bill and last up to 5 to 7 years.”

The Mayor’s 2008 Interns have also designed and printed flyers for each home with information to educate residents on why the CFL bulbs are better for the environment and their wallets. “I thought it was necessary for residents to not only get the light bulbs but to understand why they were getting them,” says Mourad.

For the past five weeks the Mayor Glover’s nine college interns have worked within City departments and completed projects that collectively, will save the City of Shreveport over twenty thousand dollars. Emily Mourad, a Political Science and Communications major, was assigned to the City’s Department of Community Development.
