July 23, 2009 - CITY OF SHREVEPORT FORMS PARTNERSHIP TO OFFER GENERAL EDUCATION DIPLOMAS TO EMPLOYEES

Youngsters aren’t the only ones getting ready to head back to school. Today fifteen City of Shreveport employees eagerly took their seats in a GED Assessment Session to pick up where they left off in their high school education. The students are workers in the city’s SPAR and Public Works Departments and the first to take advantage of the opportunity to officially and successfully complete high school.

“I congratulate and applaud these employees, many who along with their jobs have the responsibilities of a spouse, children and home,” says Mayor Cedric B. Glover. “To make the commitment and sacrifice to head back to class as a working adult is highly commendable and we are here to offer assistance, support and encouragement as you work towards academic success. Nine tenths of education is encouragement.”

The Mayor’s Office and the City of Shreveport’s Personnel Department have formed a partnership with Bossier Parish Community College’s Division of Workforce Development, Workplace Literacy Program to provide a unique educational opportunity for City employees who do not have a high school diploma or basic reading skills.

Thursday, July 23, 2009 the employees were tested for enrollment in BPPC’s Adult Education Program or Literacy Services. They will attend classes after work from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday at Bossier Parish Community College. A Saturday site is being planned for those who cannot attend classes during the week. Those assigned to Literacy Services will work with an individual tutor to increase and strengthen basic reading skills.

Bossier Parish Community College and the City of Shreveport are offering the GED Program and Literacy Services to city employees at no cost.

“The stakeholders in this partnership are committed to provide a quality educational experience that will prepare this class of city workers to successfully take the GED exam and increase their proficiency in reading,” says Angelita Jackson, City of Shreveport Personnel Department. Ms. Jackson can be reached at 318.673.5153 for more information.
