The Office of Deputy Fire Chief is in complete charge of the Operations, Aviation Task Force and Safety divisions of the Fire Department under the supervision of and directly responsible to the Fire Chief. And, in the absence of the Fire Chief, perform the Fire Chief’s normal duties. This position acts in an executive and administrative capacity, delegating authority and responsibility to the officers of the Fire Department for the proper and efficient execution of their duties.
Chief R.O. Jones, a native of Chicago, Illinois, began his career in the fire service as a Firefighter on June 24, 1976 and was the fourth African American hired by the Shreveport Fire Department. He advanced through the ranks becoming a Fire Engineer in 1985, promoting to Fire Captain in 1995 and promoting to Battalion Fire Chief in 2007. As a Battalion Fire Chief, he frequently worked out of class as Assistant Fire Chief and was promoted to Substitute Assistant Fire Chief before being promoted to Deputy Fire Chief in 2014.
Chief Jones, having served as a member of the Rules and Regulations Committee and Disciplinary Board, has been instrumental in the development and implementation of written policies and procedures. He has also served as a volunteer recruiter for Shreveport Fire Department as well as Community Youth Mentor and Coach. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management, and Associate of Science in Business Marketing.
