[ARCHIVED] Red River Flooding Emergency Information

Red River Flooding Emergency Information

The NW Louisiana Red Cross has opened a shelter at Southern University in Shreveport for Caddo residents displaced because of flooding. The shelter is located in the university gymnasium at 3050 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive.

As of noon today, water was confirmed in four houses in the 2100 block of Perrin. One of the houses is unoccupied. In the 1100 block of Wells Island Road, one family self-evacuated, and in the 1400 block of Brice, water has entered a church.

Earlier this morning, city, parish, and state officials met at the Caddo Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness to discuss overnight changes and continue plans for the weekend. Weather officials said the Red River will now crest at 34.5 feet - about six inches higher than previously expected and will remain at that level for most of the weekend.

Representatives from the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security in Baton Rouge, Louisiana State Police, and the Louisiana National Guard attended the meeting and pledged their support on land in the air. State Police are flying air support missions for local officials to observe flooded areas.

In Caddo Parish, officials are keeping a close eye along the river and on backwater flooding along Cross Bayou, Twelve Mile Bayou, McCain Creek and Middle Bayou.
Caddo and Shreveport public safety and the Caddo Levee Board are making around-the-clock checks of areas in the flood zone. They are also asking parents to talk to their children about the dangers of playing in or near flood waters, which can have swift currents and be contaminated with dangerous substances ranging from broken glass to poisonous snakes.

Citizens are encouraged to register their cell phone numbers at http://alertregistration.com/caddo-bossier to receive any messages distributed through the FirstCall Alert Network.
